On today’s episode, we interview Freelee the Banana Girl, a famous YouTube personality who claims she’s shed dozens of pounds by adhering to a 90% carbohydrate diet. Freelee eats 30 bananas throughout the day and pounds of potatoes for dinner. She also drinks two to four quarts of water, exercises 5-6 days a week and tries to get 30 minutes of sunshine every day. While her diet regime may seem extreme to some, Freelee says that she’s never felt healthier. She’s also inspired many people who say they’ve achieved similar results, slimming down by eating lots of fruits. In a typical day, Freelee might eat 15 bananas in a single smoothie, 6-10 mangoes for lunch and then a cooked, vegan dinner. “Your body and your brain run on glucose,” she explains to us. Still, we questioned her about some of the science behind the diet. While there is some evidence that a high carb diet can be helpful for some, we recommend you check with your doc first. That said, Freelee seems healthy and happy after eight years eating mostly fruit. She also looks amazing. Clearly, something is working! On today’s episode, we talk to Mark Sisson about why a healthy diet is more important than exercise when it comes to improving your physique. According to Mark, 80% of your body composition is a direct result of how you eat. You can manipulate your gene expression to become a fat-burning beast, but you’ve got to cut out a lot of junk first. By now, the list is probably very familiar to you, but it starts with sugar, then bread and industrial seed oil. “Our genes expect us to a eat a certain way based on the 2.5 million years we’ve spent on this planet,” Mark says. What do our genes expect us to eat? All the things our ancestors ate, including fish, fowl, eggs and fruit. Mark also talks to the gang about the healthy oils people should include in their diets and why they’re so beneficial. Mark loves avocado oil, and he explains exactly why. He also talks about why the health community suddenly started embracing a former pariah: red palm oil. If you don’t understand the science behind nutrition, it’s pretty hard to eat the right things. Thank god, then, for Sisson’s website “Mark’s Daily Apple,” which combines delicious recipes with the latest in health research. "This isn’t rocket science," Mark says. "It’s about learning how to make good, intuitive decisions." Juli Bauer is the founder and editor of the always-candid, never-preachy PaleOMG. She is truly one of Paleo’s most outspoken and hilarious crusaders. On today’s show, she joins Rob, Jeff and Alec to talk about her crazy rise from food blogger to NYT Bestseller. Juli found herself frustrated following recipes, so she started making them up herself. It wasn’t always easy — “who doesn’t love eating shit food?” — but she wanted to see how long she could stick to a diet. It was around that time that she started doing Crossfit, which has completely changed her life. She talks to the Open Sky gang about the kind of exercises she performs (lots of Burpees) and why she continues working as a trainer, even though she makes “absolutely no money.” Juli follows the 80/20 rule of eating (80% whole, clean food, 20% indulgences) but she doesn’t binge on the weekends and stays away from gluten. “I don’t let the 20% control the rest of my life,” she says. She’s an inspiring person in the Paleo world who has always marched to the beat of her own drum and created her own rules. LINKS: paleomg.com twitter.com/paleomg facebook.com/PaleOMG
